Being an LGBT photographer is not a task I take lightly. There is a great deal of care that is required to take on this role. However, being a member of the LGBT community myself gives me a perspective that many who work in this space do not have. Personal insight and empathy. For me, being an LGBT wedding photographer is a lived experience and one I want to improve on every year.
I have been photographing gay and lesbian weddings since 2024 and can honestly say they are one of my favourite weddings to capture. The air feels different, and the love is different. There’s a sense of joy in these days, and I’m so grateful every time I get to celebrate one.
In 2022, I started the process of wedding planning, and in 2024 I married my wife. And in this process, I had to go through the daunting experience of planning a wedding as an LGBT couple. Like many queer couples, there was a lot of anxiety around this process. Would we feel safe? Would we feel judged? Would we be comfortable with not only our photographer but every single vendor we worked with? We thankfully had a very uplifting experience. But not everyone is so lucky.
In fact, since working as an LGBT wedding photographer in the Hunter Valley, I have seen the flip side of hiring the wrong vendors. I’ve seen misgendering, introducing a couple as ‘bride and groom’ when they are same sex, and also just side eyes and other subtle (and not so subtle) queues that the couple had ultimately chosen the wrong sorts of people for their day.
