Why inclusivity matters as an LGBT wedding photographer

As an inclusive wedding and elopement photographer, one thing I strive for is for every couple I work with to feel comfortable and included. As a member of the LGBTQIA community my self, it saddens me when I hear stories of couples unable to find wedding vendors, who either do not want to work on their wedding due to their sexual orientation OR make the couple feel uncomfortable or unwanted in a time which is supposed to be the happiest in their lives. Wedding planning is a difficult process to navigate, but it shouldn’t be tarnished by non-inclusive vendors. As an LGBT wedding photographer, the one thing I want to do is to make you feel valid and comfortable.

In the wedding industry, we are here to celebrate love, love of all kinds. And love is not political, it’s not radical, it’s not anything more than a basic human experience which we are all entitled to feel safe experiencing. Whilst working at your wedding, this is something I aim to promote. Both for you and your guests that they are safe being themself and expressing their selves.

One of the key tools I use while promoting inclusivity throughout the wedding planning process is to not treat my LGBT couples any differently to their straight couple counterparts. Yes, logicistically there may be differences in getting ready timelines, BUT this does not change how I talk to my couples, and I never assume what will happen based on appearance or stereotypes.

Being a member of the community makes photographing LGBTQIA couples a lot easier than for a LGBT friendly wedding photographer because I have been in your shoes, I’m empathetic to the issues LGBTQIA couples run into while wedding planning because I’ve been there too.

Many couples I work with have felt excluded by the wedding industry in one way or another. And I’m here to let you know that you are 100% entitled to the wedding day of your dreams. Love is love, and it’s as simple as that.
