Firstly, I want to start this with a HUGE congrats! Right now you must be feeling on top of the world, you probably want to shout it from the rooftops right? Well, I’m here to say you 100% should! And the best way to do this is by investing in an engagement session with a local photographer. This may sound a little biased, I am in fact a Central Coast engagement photographer. However, this has nothing to do with me and everything to do with you.

So as wedding planning comes, the bills start piling up. One of the first things to go when planning a budget will be a pre-wedding or engagement session. They can be pricey yes, and I can understand why they get cut. This however can be a mistake. If you can’t afford an engagement session with your wedding photographer, it may be worth looking into an emerging photographer in your region. Most couples who opt not to engage in engagement photography regret it in the long run for one reason. They don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera.

For most people, being in front of the camera, and having all eyes on you is not normal. It’s a little daunting. Where do you look? How do I act? Can I even act natural in front of the camera? Can I act like it’s not there throughout the day so I’m not micromanaging everything? These are all normal thoughts and having either a couples session or engagement session before your big day can help alleviate these anxieties.

So why else should you invest in engagement photography?

Did you see what I did there? Invest. This word is key. We live in a world of selfies and quick snaps. Raw emotions are left on the back burner for the picture-perfect smile. Think of your engagement photography as an investment. An investment into your future, into your memories and into your wedding. Most people will get their photo’s professionally taken once, maybe twice in their life. One of those times is on their wedding day. And remember that photos will be there until we’re old and grey. Personally, I’d like to have more photos than just selfies when I’m looking back on memories in 15 years, so getting them professionally taken, will ensure you have something more than this. During my time as an engagement photographer, I find most people look at an engagement session for this one reason. At the end of the day, who doesn’t love beautiful moments of the beautiful parts of their lives?

Many people opt to use their photos on their invites, or save the dates for their wedding, which is also a bonus way of making your invite a little more personal.

It’s the perfect way to ‘test out’ your potential wedding photographer. If you think about it, photography is about more than just taking photos, it’s an art. And on top of this you need to get along with your photographer. Do they make you feel comfortable in front of the camera? Did you feel like you could be yourself? Did they listen to you? If you answer no to any of these, move on. It doesn’t matter how affordable they are, or how beautiful their work is. If you don’t feel comfortable around them, it will show in your photos and it will be memorable in the long run.

Engagement photography is a lot of fun. The sessions are typically speaking designed around you, and having a good time being in the company of your partner. This quality time together speaks volumes and can solidify how comfortable with each other. You can also test each other’s boundaries and gauge how comfortable each of you is in front of the camera. Communication is key. Maybe you guys thought you wanted candid photography but realised after the day posed is better for you. That is totally fine. Now you know exactly the sort of wedding photographer you’re looking for!

If you want to shout your love from the rooftops, or you’re so stoked that you just got engaged. Make sure you add engagement photography to your to-do list. As an engagement photographer, who almost didn’t get engagement photography done, I cannot recommend it enough!
